Pupusas are a traditional Salvadorian dish, however over the years, due to its tasty flavor, many Belizeans have made it part of their dietary dishes as well! Pupusas are a great influence in Belizean cuisines as a great percentage of Belize’s Population is made up of Salvadorians. In fact, Pupusas in San Pedro are a common dish to find at the farmer’s market on Saturdays in San Ignacio, Cayo too!
Nevertheless; as common as they may sound, the secret to tantalizing the taste buds, lies in the ingredients and the preparation process that only Salvadorian people are knowledgeable of.
How Pupusas in San Pedro are made….
Pupusas are made out of “masa” in English called Cornmeal dough! In addition, there is also the cheese, specially seasoned ground pork called “chicharron” and re-fried beans that is used to fill up the masa. Small round balls of masa are filled with either of the 3 fillings mentioned, or one can also enjoyed the mixed pupusas, which include the 3 fillings combined! The mixed Pupusas are very tasty indeed! After the ball is filled up it is made by hand like a corn tortilla and cooked over a griddle called “Comal”.
The traditional comal is made out of clay, however an aluminum comal can also be used. The pupusas are traditionally cooked over wood fire, but many people have upgraded and instead use gas or electric stove! Once cooked, these delicious finger licking pupusas are served with a specially prepared tomato sauce and a fermented cabbage salad called “curtido”. The curtido is made out of grated cabbage and carrots with some oregano and fermented in vinegar!
Pupusas in San Pedro are the signature food of “Salvadorian Belizeans” and if you come to Belize, you must try them! Not to mention they are very affordable, rating between $2.00-4.00 BZD for one and 3 should have you overfilled if you are not a big eater!
